Example Automatic Internet Access Backup Application > WAN ADSL, DSL or Cable Backup using a HSPA Router

A break-down in high-speed internet access will critically affect most businesses and organizations. Fast 'wired' internet access connections like ADSL, DSL, Fiber and Cable can be automatically backed-up with a 'wireless' solution like a 3G HSPA (HSDPA or HSUPA), EVDO or WIMAX connection. A smart wireless router can automatic detect if a company's primary internet access link e.g. an ADSL connection is faulty and immediately switch-over to a back-up wireless link. This implementation ensures operation continuity when its main connection is disrupted, e.g. faulty modem hardware, cabling or even service provider outages. A DUAL WAN router is not needed.

Example Solution

Automatic back up of wired internet connection using a wireless router 3G HSPA EVDO WIMAX
In this example, an office's LAN is connected to the internet via a high-speed DSL modem. To ensure business continuity in the event of the primary connection failure, a FATBOX B.A.S.E. with HSPA connection continuously detects if the DSL link is properly connected to its external resources (e.g. a vendor's database server).

If a failure is detected, the FATBOX B.A.S.E. will re-connect its wireless service, i.e. the HSPA connection and switch all the company's network outgoing traffic to this connection.  traffic to this connection.

While connected to the back-up wireless connection (which is usually more expensive and slower), the FATBOX B.A.S.E. will continuously check the primary link if its recovered. If it has, the connection will be swicthed back to this primary link and the the wireless connection disconnected to save costs.

Some of the features of the FATBOX B.A.S.E. HSUPA router that facilitates succesful implementation of this solution includes,
  • Automatic monitoring of primary WAN connection at user configured period
  • Automatic connection and switch-over of network's WAN connection to the wireless HSUPA/HSDPA service
  • Continuous monitoring of primary link to detect recovery and reconnection - to save costs and recover faster connection
  • Fast 7.2Mbps uplink and 2Mbps downlink and 40Mbps "bridged" LAN to WAN connectivity for maximum productivity
  • Telnet console via TCP/IP over HSPDA for remote management of router
  • SNMP for ease of centralized remote management of the device
  • SMS to reboot the router in case of total of 'locked' cellular PPP session
  • Wide power supply 5~30VDC ensure stability of operation
  • Industrial design and all metal construction for durability
FATBOX B.A.S.E. HSUPA also supports VRRP solution for redundancy (no single point of failure) or DUAL WAN router solution. The Application Example link - Automatic backup for WAN (and VPN) access to the internet using VRRP.
