WAN (Internet access) and VPN Backup Application > Using a 3G HSPA (HSDPA or HSUPA) Router with VRRP

A break-down in high-speed internet access will critically affect most businesses and organizations. Fast 'wired' internet access connections like ADSL, DSL, Fiber and Cable can be automatically backed-up with a 'wireless' solution like a 3G HSPA (HSDPA or HSUPA), EVDO or WIMAX connection. Using VRRP, a switched Ethernet network can decide between using a primary router (e.g. a CISCO remote office VPN router) connected to a DSL link or a 'back-up'  cellular based link for its external connection (e.g. IPSEC VPN to head-office servers).

This VRRP based implementation ensures operation continuity when its primary WAN link is disrupted, e.g. faulty modem hardware, cabling or even service provider outages. There is no single point of failure with regards to the routing and WAN connectivity.

Example Solution

Automatic back up of wired internet connection using a wireless router 3G HSPA EVDO WIMAX
In this example, an office's LAN (e.g. POS terminals and computers of a chain store) is normally connected to its back-office servers via a  VPN appliance and a high-speed DSL modem. To ensure business continuity in the event of the primary connection failure, a FATBOX B.A.S.E. with HSPA connection is designated as the lower VRRP priority connection. It gets 'elected' by the LAN as the external route if the primary VPN appliance detects a failure on its WAN link or has itself broken down. The FATBOX B.A.S.E. router can either be 'always on' or 'on demand' and also able to connect the LAN with up to 10 IPSEC 3DES tunnels to the back-office VPN subnets and servers. The primary router gets 'elected' back when it has recovered from it's fault (or replaced).

Some of the features of the FATBOX B.A.S.E. HSUPA router that facilitates succesful implementation of this solution includes,
  • Supports VRRP for automatic external link fail-switchover from a primary router/WAN route
  • AUTOPING to monitor integrity to target host (e.g. a server in VPN server subnet) to ensure link's end-to-end reliability
  • Fast 7.2Mbps uplink and 2Mbps downlink and 40Mbps "bridged" LAN to WAN connectivity for maximum productivity
  • Telnet console via TCP/IP over HSPDA for remote management of router
  • SNMP for ease of centralized remote management of the device
  • SMS to reboot the router in case of total of 'locked' cellular PPP session
  • Wide power supply 5~30VDC ensure stability of operation
  • Industrial design and all metal construction for durability
FATBOX B.A.S.E. HSUPA can also provide automatic WAN backup with VRRP or DUAL WAN router. The Application Example link -  Automatic backup for WAN access to the internet (without DUAL WAN router).
